RWE Power AG
A cooperation between Goethe-School and RWE Power AG was signed in November 2003. The cooperation is to give pupils a better understanding of energy, with its focal point in politics, geographic, physics and social science.
Visit of the Nuclear Power Station “Mülheim-Kärlic
The pupils of the 13th grade visited the nuclear power station “Mülheim-Kärlich” in May 2003. Impressive was the fact that it was very clean and didn’t really seem to be a power station, but rather a hospital. The following discussion in the information centre was about many aspects of the power station in particular environmental questions.
Workshop: "Enterprise in the National and Internat
The commitment of our pupils as well as the high quality of the group works impressed the RWE officials and showed the large interest of our pupils in this topic. The questionnaire, which was filled in at the end of the meeting by all pupils, had positive results: at this meeting there was nothing to improve according to the opinion of the pupils. A continuation of the Workshops is wished by all participants and it is already planed.
Visiting the Incineration Plant in Karnap
The grade 10 used the “moving week” to an attendance of the incineration plant in Karnap. With this meeting it succeeded to the RWE officials, Dr. Poppe, Mr. Bohn and Mr. Schmidt to arouse the interest of our pupils and pupils in the problems of the waste disposal and environmental protection.
Travelling “Boa”
The travel to Niederaussem to visit the new large “Braunkohlebock” (RWE calls this power station "Boa" as an abbreviation for "brown coal power station with optimised installation engineering) was accomplished by Mrs. Neumann- Schillings and Mrs. Ingler with the 11th grade. “Boa“ is a power station with an output of 1000 Mega Watts, which was established in scope of the power station renewal program. The project managers, Mr. Pflugbeil and Dr. Poppe from the main office, presented the progressive concept of this power station, which is sufficient both within the range of environmental protection and economy for high requirements, to the pupils. The size of the power station is impressing. With a height of the cooling tower of 200 meters and the boiler house of 167 meters critics speak also of " megalomania”. These dimensions actually result however from the requirements of the competition on the current market.
Visit to Pumped Storage Power Plant
"In each regard successfully" Mr. Guterl called the visitation of the pumped storage power plant in Herdecke. The power plant uses the potential energy of the water saved in a reservoir to generate electric current. The pupils praised the high authority of the adviser, Mr. Dipl. Ing. Schulz as well as the successful interaction between the group and the participants from the work. The usefulness for the subject "physics” was stressed from all participants of these excursion.
